City Council Approves Appointment of Cerritos City Clerk

CERRITOS, CA - December 13, 2024 - The Cerritos City Council on Thursday approved the hiring of Cynthia Nava as City Clerk. Nava, who brings 22 years of administrative experience in city government, was selected following a search from an independent firm retained by the Council. She had been Acting City Clerk since the retirement of Vida Barone in September.

“The Cerritos City Council is pleased to approve the hiring of Cynthia Nava to lead the City Clerk’s Office,” said Cerritos Mayor Naresh Solanki. “Additionally, we’d like to express our gratitude for her service these past several months as Acting City Clerk and throughout her career with the City.”

Nava first joined the City of Cerritos in 2002 in the Building and Safety Division. She advanced through the organization, supporting the Recreation Services Division before joining the City Clerk’s Office in 2018, giving her a unique perspective on the many facets of the City. Nava received her Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Fullerton, where she also received a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.

“I would like to share my sincere thanks to the Cerritos City Council for this appointment and their support of the City Clerk’s Office,” said Nava. “I’m also appreciative of the guidance and collaboration through the City Manager’s Office and all departments during this transition. I’m excited to continue working alongside our staff, residents and government partners to build upon the strong foundation laid by my predecessor and enhance our service to the Cerritos community.”

“We are excited to grow our partnership with Mrs. Nava, who has demonstrated strong leadership, work ethic, and teamwork qualities during her tenure with the City,” said City Manager Robert A. Lopez. “The City Clerk plays a vital role to ensuring the effective implementation of governance proceedings, and we are confident in Mrs. Nava’s continued efforts in this role.”

Under the City’s Charter and governing documents, the City Council directly hires the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk.

The City Clerk serves as the municipal corporate governance officer for the City of Cerritos in accordance with the City Charter, State of California Government Codes and ordinances adopted by the City Council. The City Clerk’s Office administers the City’s primary citywide municipal corporate governance programs including legislative services, information and records management, elections administration, and legal and regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local statutes. Additionally, the Office officiates legal proceedings on behalf of the City to ensure full transparency to the public and interested parties and serves as the agency’s Notary Public.
